IPDC, FEPA Sign MoU for Green Certification of Special Economic Zones

The Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IPDC) and the Federal Environmental Protection Authority (FEPA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enable Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Ethiopia to receive Green Certification.

The MoU was signed by Feseha Yetgesu, PhD, CEO of IPDC, and Lelisie Neme, Director General of FEPA.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Feseha Yetgesu highlighted that the green certification would enhance the competitiveness and global acceptance of Ethiopia’s SEZs. He emphasized that the certification aligns with eco-industrial practices and will create a more worker-friendly environment. Moreover, it is expected to boost Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), as consumers increasingly favor products made in environmentally responsible production facilities.

Feseha also noted that the IPDC's ongoing participation in Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative strengthens the country’s commitment to sustainability.

Lelisie Neme explained that the certification process will involve auditing the status of each SEZ, helping to identify which zones meet the required criteria and which do not. The green certification will follow international guidelines and environmental protection conventions ratified by Ethiopia.

A key factor in enhancing the global competitiveness of industrial parks, free trade zones, and SEZs is their ability to develop and maintain eco-friendly systems. The implementation of the green certification will be based on the National Eco-Industrial Park guideline, which was developed with the support of the World Bank, customizing the International Eco-Industrial framework to suit Ethiopia's specific needs.
